The Break-Up: When to Bundle, When to Sell Separately

By: Tisha Hedges, Director of Operations

Whatever you’re selling, you want to get the best possible profit. Sometimes that means keeping things together, like movie collections. Sometimes, it means breaking them up and selling them individually, like a set of golf clubs. Determining how to get the most for your products isn’t complicated. You just have to ask the right questions:

1. Do these items have more value together?
Some collectibles and products are only valuable as complete sets. Check online to see what comparable packages are selling for, versus the individual pieces.

2. How much more time and money would it take to sell them separately?
Are the extra listing fees (if selling on eBay) and added time you’ll spend worth the difference in the profit margin?

It’s easy to look at these things and apply that information to your specific products, and figure out how you should sell things that will give you the best profit. You can always test selling items as well. Have a bundle to incite the customer to buy it all, but then also sell separately to get the best of both worlds.

Before purchasing with you, buyers must perceive that your business is legitimate and real. But establishing customer relations takes time. And if they don’t feel comfortable buying from you, you’ll never get a chance to develop those relationships in the first place!
