To Link… or Not to Link

By: Tisha Hedges, Director of Operation, WorldwideBrands.com

What is the purpose of link exchange?

Link exchanges can be advantageous to online retailers because

1.) You gain traffic from the sites you’re linked to and

2.) Links are helpful for search engine optimization.

Google loves page rank, which is a measure of the importance of the sites linked to you. The more sites with high page rank that link to you, the higher your page ranks, and the higher you appear in Google’s results.

Yahoo loves popularity, which measures how many pages are linked to you.

Things to Watch For

Most search engines penalize for linking to sites that are spammy, or unrelated to yours. So make sure to only link to sites that are complementary to your business, not in competition with it.

For example, if you sell CDs, you might benefit by partnering with sites that carry CD players and CD Wallets.

If you sell diving equipment, you could benefit from linking with travel sites, vacation sites or travel agency sites.

Before associating yourself with any site, make sure it’s legitimate. You don’t want to ruin your reputation by joining a link farm or identifying with disreputable sites. (A link farm is a form of spamming search engines!)

Before purchasing with you, buyers must perceive that your business is legitimate and real. But establishing customer relations takes time. And if they don’t feel comfortable buying from you, you’ll never get a chance to develop those relationships in the first place!
