Best Products to Sell in 2012

Happy New Year Everyone!
It’s funny how we are literally surrounded by hundreds of products every day, but when it comes time to think of products we want to sell online we sometimes go blank.
It’s not a bad thing if you are stuck trying to decide what to sell. In some ways it’s actually good! It means you understand that the product you choose to sell is very important to your business. It means that you know you can’t just blindly start selling a product and hope for the best.
So what are the best products to sell in 2012? The answer doesn’t lie in a “list” of products but rather a type of product. On the most basic level there are two types of products any retailer can choose to sell:
1. Mainstream Products
2. Niche Products
Mainstream Products represent the products that the largest portion of the buying public likes to buy; things like electronic gadgets, televisions, phones, clothes, shoes and etc. Most people’s homes are full of mainstream popular products; things that people just love (almost need) to have. Who doesn’t want a computer, television or cell phone? Retailers who successfully sell mainstream products make ton’s of money! They are selling what they can easily see most people want to buy.
Niche Products, on the other hand, represent products that don’t really appeal to the masses. Not everyone wants a fish aquarium in their house or throw rug decorating their living room floor. There are far less people wanting a cool new bird house than who want a cool new cellphone. But you know what? The online market is a big place and less shoppers can still mean a whole lot of money to a small home-based business.
It’s easy to get caught up in the notion that if more people want to buy something the better chance you have of making a sale. That’s not true online. Products that get the most searches (mainstream products) WILL have the most competition. The more competition there is the cheaper the products have to be sold for to make a sale…and the more ways you have to try to get it cheaper so you can make a profit (i.e. buying in bulk). It’s not a good model for a new home-business on a small budget.
That’s why selling niche products are so successful for many new online sellers; they can be sold with very low overhead costs…which makes them perfect for startups.
Consider what a Niche Product is:
1. Thousands of people shop for it online each month
2. Big retailers don’t stock it because the customer base is too small
3. A good chance the competition is very weak
4. You can make hundreds, thousands or ten’s of thousands a month in sales.
5. Advertising costs are typically low
Niche products are *perfect* for new online sellers. They’ll be the best types of products for new home-based businesses to sell in 2012 and for years to come.

Before purchasing with you, buyers must perceive that your business is legitimate and real. But establishing customer relations takes time. And if they don’t feel comfortable buying from you, you’ll never get a chance to develop those relationships in the first place!
