Internet Service Providers plan caps on amount of data you can download
Your ISP may have news for you. Your data plan may soon come with a cap. Download more than your allotted amount of data and you may either be shut off (Charter Cable) or stuck with a bill for the excess use.
GigaOM.com reports on the plans and recent changes for the major cable and phone ISP services.
“We wrote our original chart in October 2012, noting that at that time 64 percent of Americans were covered by a cap at the end of 2011. Today (or rather, at the end of the second quarter) the percent of American broadband subscribers covered by a cap remains the same. However, the caps themselves are changing.”
In some cases, customers are offered a discount to stay below the cap. In others, they pay a premium (typically, $10) when they exceed it.
Most ISPs report that the caps only affect about 2% of their customers.
The story contains a chart showing major ISPs and their stance on data capping.
