Over the last 10 years, the internet has changed dramatically. The growth of Social Media, for example, has changed forever, the way people communicate with each other. There are many other examples, too. In response to these gradual changes, marketers need to adjust their communication techniques to meet people where they are now.

One example of the changes needed is in how SEO brings traffic to a site.

In the past, the key was to determine your targeted keywords and then use them frequently in your site. Then if you added backlinks from other sites, no matter how high the quallity was of these sites, your site could rise to the top of search engines.

Today, it’s important to create quality content, and preferably content that includes rich media (for example, using new technology like Google Hangouts).

Pay per Click methods have long been used for traffic acquisition, also. But again, the methods that are effective aren’t the ones used 10 years ago.
In the early days, you could get $.05 clicks on Google Adwords. That rarely happens today. You are lucky to get $1.00 clicks, even on long-tail keywords.

Today one of the best PPC techniques is to take advantage of the hyper-targeting capabilities of Facebook and other platforms, where you can often get visitors for as low as $.01 per click.

For Social Media Traffic has also changed. In the past, it was effective to simply create accounts on places like Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, and Google and pay for hundreds of Likes/Followers to your accounts. But this slightly targeted approach no longer works.

Now you need to actually engage your audience. To do that, you need to post top content and then get real people to interact with your content.
