Here are a few tips on building a business online. Many people try and fail. Maybe these will help you succeed.

Be professional in all you do.

You don’t want to make a quick buck; you want a long-term business.

First, always take the high road. Sleazy marketing will bite you. It’s no way to build a real business.

Second, carelessness in your work or lack of serious, concentrated action can kill an otherwise profitable business. Procrastination, at best, delays your success. And it can do more, killing your business completely.

Understand the “landscape”

1. Know where there are large clusters of people in your niche (to Discover these clusters, look for the authority sites in your niche). Then find ways to get to know these people, their wants, needs and problems.

Solving their problems is how you earn your living.

2. Know the competition. This takes two perspectives:

a. Understand the products available to solve the problems people have. Find the ones that work best. Become an affiliate for those (or, in the case of physical products, be an Amazon affiliate and promote the best products in your niche.

b. Know the other sellers. You aren’t the only person who promotes your selected product, quite likely. How are marketers already promoting this product. What ways aren’t already being used, ways that will help you stand out, and draw people to your sales page, instead of the others?

3. Know the technology and governmental environment. If laws are coming to declare a popular marketing technique illegal, you want to kow before the law takes effect.

If Google changes its rules about what is considered a valid web technique and decides to downgrade sites using a tool, you want to know as soon as possible to avoid having your site drop in the rankings or be removed altogether.
