Understanding the value of live social videos
In 2016, 20,000 people gsathered on the live-streaming app Periscope to watch people in Newcastle, England, navigate a puddle. There were no pre-scripted superheroes in tight pants or lush video cinematography. It was just a few people playing around in a puddle in the middle of England.
Sure, we could point to the 55 million people that tuned in to watch the presidential debate on Facebook. Or we could dive into all of the sports live streaming (which involves billions of people), but we think that the Newcastle puddle video is the best summation of live streaming. It’s real”.
