301 Redirect and Its SEO Impact
A 301 redirect is a permanent redirection status code used in web development to indicate that a page has been permanently moved to a new location. It ensures that both users and search engines are directed to the new URL, maintaining SEO value and user experience continuity.
Semrush contributor Rachel Handley has published an article explaining 301 Redirect and how they affect SEO.
She says, “301 redirects are important in SEO because they help your site maintain its search visibility by transferring search engine rankings and ranking signals from old pages to replacement pages.
Importantly, 301s transfer PageRank.
PageRank is a system Google uses to measure a webpage’s importance based primarily on its backlinks (links it gets from other websites).
These backlinks provide varying levels of value, known as link equity.
When a 301 redirect is in place, Google can reassign link equity to the replacement page. Which can help the replacement page perform better in search results.”
